Dangote Refinery has confirmed that it sells Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, at N990 per litre for distribution by trucks.

Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, disclosed this pricing approach in a statement issued on Sunday, explaining that the company benchmarks its prices against international rates to ensure competitiveness.

“We believe our prices are fair relative to imported alternatives,” Chiejina said, responding to accusations that Dangote’s pricing is too high.

He warned that any competitor claiming to sell PMS at lower rates might be importing substandard products, which could harm both consumer health and vehicle durability.

Chiejina also noted a lack of laboratory testing facilities by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to detect low-quality imports.

He further explained that after fuel deregulation, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) set an initial price benchmark by selling PMS to marketers at N971 per litre for ship-based sales and N990 per litre for truck distribution.

Dangote Refinery he said has since aligned with this rate and even reduced prices to N960 per litre for ship-based sales while maintaining N990 for truck distribution.

In addition, Chiejina alleged that an international trading company has leased a nearby depot to blend and distribute substandard products, undercutting Dangote’s quality products.

He noted that such practices harm the growth of local refining efforts. Drawing parallels, Chiejina pointed out that the United States and Europe often impose tariffs to protect local industries, advocating similar support for Nigerian refining to encourage job creation and economic growth.

“We are committed to delivering affordable, high-quality fuel refined domestically. The public should disregard misleading information from those profiting from imports at the country’s expense,” he said.
