Dangote Refinery Lauded as Catalyst for Nigeria’s Industrial Revolution

The $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been described as a pivotal force in Nigeria’s journey toward economic independence and industrial transformation.
This commendation came during a tour of the refinery by the Technical Committee of the One-Stop Shop (OSS) for the sale of crude and refined products in naira.
Led by Mrs. Maureen Ogbonna, Coordinator of the OSS Technical Committee, the delegation commended the scale, ambition, and impact of the refinery, describing it as a “breath of fresh air” with the potential to reshape virtually every sector of Nigeria’s economy.
“This refinery touches all our lives. There’s scarcely any sector unaffected. From pharmaceuticals to construction, food to plastics, this project is transformational,” Ogbonna said during the tour. “God has used the President of the Dangote Group to liberate Nigeria. I see this as the beginning of an industrial revolution.”
The visit to the facility forms part of the Committee’s wider mandate to support the federal government’s naira-for-crude policy, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of achieving domestic self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign exchange for energy trade.
Ogbonna acknowledged the complexity and sophistication of the refinery, reflecting on her previous visits to the facility during the construction phase. “It is truly mind-blowing that one man could envision and execute such a project. As we toured the refinery, we thought we had seen everything until we reached the laboratory. That lab alone is an institution. I don’t know of any institution in Nigeria or even globally that boasts such a laboratory for petrochemical,” she said.
She urged Aliko Dangote and his team to remain focused, describing the refinery as a national and global milestone rather than a personal enterprise. “We feel truly honoured to have been warmly received by the President of the Dangote Group and his team. My advice to him is: do not be discouraged by critics. He was never self-centred. Despite the obstacles, he was driven by a vision for Nigeria’s future, reaching far beyond Africa,” she added.
Responding to the delegation, Aliko Dangote praised the OSS Technical Committee for its work in advancing the federal government’s naira-for-crude initiative, which aims to conduct domestic crude oil transactions in local currency. According to him, the policy has already begun to yield positive results by helping to lower petroleum product prices, reduce reliance on foreign exchange, and stabilise the naira.
He explained, however, that the refinery has faced a major hurdle in the form of limited domestic crude oil supply. This shortfall, he said, has forced the refinery to increasingly rely on imported crude from the United States in recent months.
Dangote stressed that the refinery’s development was driven by a long-term vision of industrialising Nigeria and creating value-added industries. He pointed out that executing the project required significant
