The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr. Shemeldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, has called for stronger professional collaboration and support from the United Kingdom District of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to accelerate the development of the National Treasury Academy (NTA), Orozo.
A statement signed by the Director of Press in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, said Dr. Ogunjimi made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the ICAN UK District, led by its Chairman, Mr. Akintayo Ojo, FCNA, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.
Dr. Ogunjimi said the Treasury is determined to transform the Academy into a world-class institution that will serve as a hub for training and research in public financial management. He noted that collaboration with the ICAN UK District would bring valuable international exposure and professional depth to the project.
He said, “We want the National Treasury Academy to be aligned with global standards and become a true center of excellence in public finance and accounting. Your support, particularly in knowledge sharing and technical capacity development, will go a long way in achieving this vision.”
The Accountant General urged the delegation to contribute their expertise in accounting principles and international best practices to strengthen the Academy’s institutional framework and curriculum. According to him, such partnerships will help raise the competence level of personnel in Nigeria’s public finance system.
He assured the ICAN UK District of the Treasury’s full participation in its upcoming 35th Annual Conference, which is scheduled to hold in early March 2026. “The Treasury staff will actively participate in the 2026 UK ICAN Conference. It will be an opportunity for our professionals to engage, learn, and exchange ideas with their peers from across the world,” he stated.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the ICAN UK District, Mr. Akintayo Ojo, commended Dr. Ogunjimi for his continued support to the accounting profession, noting that his commitment has contributed significantly to the achievements of the District.
He said, “We deeply appreciate your constant encouragement and professional guidance. It has been instrumental to the growth of our District and the advancement of ICAN’s global reach.”
Mr. Ojo also shared details of the District’s preparations for its 35th Annual Conference, adding that the event would provide a platform for professionals to discuss new trends, innovations, and challenges in global finance and accounting. He extended an official invitation to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to attend the conference.
The meeting, according to both parties, reaffirmed the importance of partnership between Nigeria’s public finance institutions and international professional bodies in promoting excellence, transparency, and innovation in financial management.
