The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have agreed to work closer together to fix issues holding back Nigeria’s new tax system.

The two agencies are focusing on solving complaints about the electronic money transfer levy, stamp duties, tax refunds, and how revenue is shared between governments.

This agreement came during a visit in Abuja on Wednesday, when the Executive Secretary of the JRB, Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, visited the Chairman of the RMAFC, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu.

Speaking on the complaints from businesses and the public, Mr. Adesokan said the board hears the concerns regarding tax refunds, electronic transfer taxes, and advance tax payments.

“The Joint Revenue Board remains committed to working closely with RMAFC and other stakeholders to ensure that revenues are properly attributed to the appropriate states and that taxpayers are treated fairly under the new tax framework,” Mr. Adesokan said.

He explained that the new tax reforms were made to bring fairness and clarity to how taxes are collected and shared between the federal and state governments. He said the goals are to create a system that helps taxpayers, protects government finances, and makes the nation’s economy stable.

To make this happen, the JRB leader promised that his board will keep talking with the right authorities and provide the technical reports and support needed to make the reforms work. He noted that agencies must work together because proper teamwork is the only way to make the new tax laws successful.

In his response, the RMAFC Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, said the commission wants to make sure the ongoing changes bring good results for both the government and everyday taxpayers across the country.

“The Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission remains committed to promoting transparency, fairness, and accountability in Nigeria’s revenue administration. As key stakeholders in the nation’s fiscal architecture, we must work together to ensure that ongoing revenue reforms protect the interests of taxpayers while guaranteeing equitable revenue allocation across all levels of government,” Dr. Shehu said.

The RMAFC boss added that the commission will continue to back government plans that increase revenue, as long as the money is shared according to existing laws.

Answering the specific complaints about refunds and electronic taxes, Dr. Shehu said that continuous talks and technical meetings are necessary to build public trust and ensure the system is fair.

“The Commission is committed to supporting measures that enhance compliance, improve transparency, and foster public confidence in the nation’s tax administration framework. With sustained cooperation among federal and subnational governments, revenue institutions, and with proper implementation of the ongoing reforms, we expect to witness significant improvements in revenue collection and fiscal efficiency over the next five to six years,” Dr. Shehu added.

A statement from the RMAFC, signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Maryam Umar Yusuf, noted that the meeting ended with both organizations promising to protect taxpayers, share information, and work together to help Nigeria grow.
