Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied reports circulating in some media outlets that it is importing finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing such claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company clarified that the alleged product was not petrol but an “intermediate feedstock” that will undergo full refining at its facilities in Nigeria. It explained that the process of importing and refining feedstocks is a standard global practice designed to optimise production and product quality.

“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol,” the company said. “It will be fully refined in our processing units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.”

Dangote Petroleum Refinery noted that, as a world-scale complex refinery, it processes a wide range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks in line with international norms. The company said its operations strictly comply with all regulatory specifications and that it only produces and sells high-quality fuels.

Operating within a Free Trade Zone, the refinery stated that its products meet the same standards as those exported to some of the world’s most regulated markets, including the United States and Europe. According to the statement, the refinery’s ability to supply these markets demonstrates its strict adherence to global benchmarks for quality and safety.

“All imported feedstocks are accompanied by quality certificates, which are transparently shared with regulators,” the statement continued. “We are also willing to make these documents available to the public in the interest of full transparency and accountability.”

The company restated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s drive toward energy self-sufficiency, ensuring the highest standards of environmental safety, and providing cleaner fuels for both domestic and international consumers.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which began operations earlier this year, is the largest single-train refinery in the world with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. It is regarded as a critical component of Nigeria’s quest to end fuel import dependence and strengthen the country’s position as a major player in the global energy market.
