The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has enlisted the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to join forces with the Nigeria Police Force in enforcing compulsory third-party vehicle insurance nationwide.
At a joint press briefing held at the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, NAICOM Commissioner, Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, disclosed that discussions between both agencies had yielded positive outcomes, paving the way for stronger collaboration.
He emphasized that the partnership would not only enhance road safety but also ensure stricter compliance with insurance regulations.
“We have engaged extensively with the Corps Marshal and his team to explore various areas of collaboration,” Omosehin stated. “I am pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement to work together in promoting safe motoring and enforcing mandatory third-party insurance.”
He urged vehicle owners to embrace third-party insurance, assuring them of NAICOM’s commitment to ensuring prompt claims payments. “We want to reassure Nigerians that we are fully committed to resolving any claims-related concerns,” he said, adding that the Commission is prepared to meet public expectations within the insurance sector.
To address potential complaints from motorists, NAICOM has set up a dedicated complaints desk to handle grievances efficiently.
On verifying authentic insurance policies, Omosehin highlighted several initiatives, including a USSD code for offline verification, an online portal accessible via policy or registration number, and a regularly updated list of licensed insurance companies on NAICOM’s website. Acknowledging past challenges with outdated records due to license withdrawals, he assured stakeholders of improved updates going forward.
Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing compliance with third-party insurance, which is mandated under the National Road Traffic Regulations 2016.
“Third-party insurance is part of Regulation 139 and is compulsory for all vehicle owners,” Mohammed stated. He added that FRSC personnel would intensify efforts to ensure adherence while remaining open to further partnerships that advance road safety.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force had earlier commenced nationwide enforcement of third-party motor insurance policies on February 1, 2025.
With this strengthened collaboration, Nigerians are urged to comply with third-party insurance regulations, contributing to safer roads and enhanced protection for all road users.
