The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTN) approval to disconnect Exchange Telecommunications Limited due to the latter’s failure to settle outstanding interconnect charges.

In a statement released by NCC Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, the Commission stated that Exchange was duly notified of MTN’s application and given an opportunity to present its case. However, after careful examination, the NCC determined that Exchange failed to provide sufficient justification for non-payment of the outstanding charges.

The NCC’s decision is based on Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators.

Effective five days from Friday, December 27, 2024, MTN will discontinue passing voice and data traffic through Exchange and will utilize alternative channels to interconnect with other Network Service Providers. This disconnection will remain in effect until further notice from the Commission.

This action by the NCC shows the importance of fair and equitable business practices within the telecommunications sector and aims to ensure a level playing field for all operators.
