The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed confidence that the recent Presidential Order signed by President Bola Tinubu will significantly enhance the protection of critical telecommunications infrastructure across the country.

The Presidential Order, issued under the Cybercrimes Act of 2024, designates critical national information infrastructure as a protected asset, safeguarding vital telecom assets from vandalism, theft, and fiber cuts.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that “no sector of the national life is left out of the digital transformation conversation. It impacts all of us.”

Over the years, the telecommunications industry has faced numerous challenges due to vandalism, theft, and fiber cuts caused by construction activities. These disruptions have hindered the provision of reliable communication services and hampered the country’s digital progress.

With the Presidential Order in place, the NCC is empowered to take decisive action against individuals or organizations that violate the law. The Order prohibits the sealing, removal, or damage of telecommunications infrastructure without a lawful court order.

The NCC’s proactive advocacy and collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, were instrumental in securing this important development.

By safeguarding critical telecommunications infrastructure, the Presidential Order will contribute to a more robust and resilient digital ecosystem in Nigeria.
