Nigeria’s Road Crashes Decrease by 9.69% in Q2 2024

Nigeria saw a 9.69% reduction in road crashes in the second quarter of 2024, with 2,404 incidents recorded, compared to 2,662 in Q1. This also represents an 18.98% drop from 2,967 crashes in Q2 2023, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The report indicated that serious crashes were the most common, accounting for 1,525 cases in Q2 2024, followed by 661 fatal cases and 218 minor cases. Notably, all three categories (fatal, serious, and minor) declined from the previous quarter.
Tragically, 1,076 males lost their lives in Q2 2024, representing 82.45% of total fatalities. Meanwhile, 5,837 males were injured, making up 76.30% of the injured. A total of 3,612 vehicles were involved in crashes, a decrease of 8.6% from the 3,952 vehicles involved in Q1.
By region, the North-Central zone recorded the highest number of crashes in Q2 with 867 incidents, followed by the South-West with 661, while the South-East had the fewest with 119.
The North-Central zone also reported the highest casualty count, with 3,020 injured or killed, followed by the South-West with 2,019 casualties, and the South-South with the lowest at 452.
