The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has formalized a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Defence to significantly enhance Nigeria’s defence capabilities and drive self-reliance in military hardware production.

This collaboration was cemented through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a critical step in the nation’s pursuit of advanced indigenous defence technology and infrastructure.

The agreement, as disclosed in a statement signed by Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, NASENI’s Director of Information, signifies a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defence infrastructure through innovation and technological advancement rooted in indigenous expertise.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, emphasized the importance of establishing a robust Military Industrial Complex (MIC) in Nigeria. According to Halilu, the MIC is not just a strategic initiative but a national imperative, particularly in a global security environment that is increasingly complex and rapidly evolving.

“In today’s world, where threats are multifaceted and constantly emerging, it is essential for Nigeria to be self-reliant in addressing its security challenges,” Halilu stated. “This partnership between NASENI and the Ministry of Defence is a testament to our commitment to harness Nigeria’s scientific and engineering expertise in the service of national defence.”

NASENI, with its extensive track record in research, development, and manufacturing, is positioned as a key player in the establishment of the MIC. The newly envisioned Military Industrial Complex is expected to serve as a central hub for the development, production, and maintenance of a wide array of military equipment, ranging from small arms to sophisticated defense systems.

This initiative aims to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that meets the needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces while fostering the growth of local industries. By reducing dependence on foreign imports, the MIC is set to not only bolster national security but also contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic development.

Halilu further elaborated on the strategic vision behind the MoU, stating, “This collaboration marks the beginning of a long-term effort to enhance our defence capabilities through innovation and indigenous production. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that our military is equipped with the best tools to defend our nation, and through this partnership, we will lay the foundation for a self-reliant defence industry that will also drive economic growth.”

Mr. Halilu expressed his deep appreciation to the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, and the entire Ministry of Defence for their unwavering support and confidence in NASENI’s capabilities. “We are ready to work tirelessly to ensure that the vision of a Nigerian Military Industrial Complex becomes a reality. We owe it to our nation, to our Armed Forces, and to the generations yet unborn,” he said.

The significance of this MoU extends beyond just the defence sector. It represents a strategic partnership aimed at elevating Nigeria’s defence capabilities, which in turn contributes to broader national security and economic development goals.

The signing ceremony was attended by several high-profile stakeholders, including the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, and Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. Senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces were also present, underscoring the importance of this agreement in the broader context of national security.

The MoU between NASENI and the Ministry of Defence marks the beginning of a new era in Nigerian defence, characterized by innovation, self-reliance, and a commitment to securing the nation’s future through indigenous technological advancements.
