Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has pledged to prioritize transparency as the bedrock of his leadership.

This commitment to openness and accountability, he believes, will be the foundation for building a strong, efficient, and resilient telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

Dr. Maida made this declaration during a recent courtesy visit to the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. He used the opportunity to share his vision and strategic priorities since assuming office in October 2023, highlighting his alignment with the Minister’s 5-pillar Strategic Plan.

Maida emphasized the critical role of transparency in self-regulation and driving the Commission towards operational excellence. “By being transparent, we hold ourselves accountable, pushing us to excel and ultimately deliver on our goals,” he stated. He commended the Minister for his own leadership by example in this area, recognizing its potential to transform the industry into a model of accountability for both the public and industry players.

Maida identified Quality of Experience (QoE) as a top priority, declaring that “quality of experience will not be negotiable.” He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to taking compliance seriously and establishing a minimum acceptable standard for QoE across the industry. This focus on user experience aligns with the “Customer-Centric Pillar” of the Minister’s Strategic Plan.

Recognizing broadband connectivity as the backbone of the digital economy and financial inclusion, Maida emphasized its alignment with the “Digital Economy Pillar” of the Strategic Plan. He pledged the NCC’s commitment to promoting broadband infrastructure development and closing the digital divide across the nation.

Maida acknowledged the immense potential of technological advancements like the 5G revolution, stating the Commission’s focus on maximizing its benefits to create new opportunities and enhance connectivity. This aligns with the “Innovation Pillar” of the Strategic Plan.

To improve responsiveness and efficiency, Maida announced an ongoing review of internal processes, including the digitization of most Commission operations. This commitment to modernization aligns with the “Governance and Institutions Pillar” of the Strategic Plan.

Maida expressed his belief that by prioritizing operational excellence and regulatory effectiveness, the NCC can attract more investors to the telecommunications industry. This investment influx will lead to vertical business growth, increased Foreign Direct Investment, and ultimately, job creation and revenue generation. This aligns with the “Entrepreneurship and Employment Pillar” of the Strategic Plan.

Recognizing the potential of the Digital Bridge Institute in driving a knowledge-based economy, Maida announced plans to revamp and refocus the Institute to extract its optimal value in line with the “Knowledge Pillar” of the Strategic Plan.

The Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani when responding acknowledged the NCC’s crucial role in achieving Nigeria’s digital aspirations. He assured Maida of his full support and collaboration, stating, “I want to assure you that you have the best partner in me. We will work together to achieve the goals and vision we have set.”
