Agora Policy to Host Dialogue on Nigeria, Climate Change, and the Green Economy

As Nigeria confronts the escalating challenges of a changing climate, Agora Policy and its partners will gather key stakeholders on November 22, 2023, for a policy dialogue aimed at mapping out a sustainable path for the country.
Organized in the lead-up to and preparation for COP28, the high-level event, titled “Nigeria, Climate Change, and the Green Economy,” will delve into the risks and opportunities presented to Nigeria by climate change, the energy transition, and the green economy.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, The Cable Newspapers, The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), Clean Technology Hub, Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD), and Nature News, will be held at the main auditorium of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The event will feature the public presentation of Agora Policy’s latest policy report, “Climate Change and Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria,” produced with the support of the MacArthur Foundation, the primary sponsor of this policy dialogue.
The report highlights the potential for exacerbated adverse effects of climate change in Nigeria, further compounding the country’s developmental challenges. It also underscores the opportunities for Nigeria to foster rapid economic growth, diversify its energy sources, generate employment for its growing youthful and urbanizing populace, and address pervasive poverty and inequality through an equitable energy transition.
Following the presentation of the report, a policy conversation will convene stakeholders critical to climate action and the operation of a green economy in the country. The panellists include Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, CEO, Sterling Bank; Dr. Salisu Dahiru, Director-General, the National Council on Climate Change; Mrs. Olufunke Baruwa, Programme Officer, Ford Foundation; and Ms. Tengi George-Ikoli Senior Officer, the Natural Resource Governance Institute. The panel will be moderated by Mr. Amara Nwankpa, the Director of Public Policy Initiatives at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation.
An interactive session will follow the panel discussion, providing a platform for key stakeholders to share diverse perspectives on Nigeria’s path to enhanced resilience to climate change and a transition to a greener economy.
