By Patience Ikpeme
Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, has solidified his position as Africa’s richest man and has ascended to the 65th spot on the global billionaire list.
This significant rise is attributed to the successful operation of his newly constructed petrochemical refinery, valued at over $20 billion.
Bloomberg’s latest top 500 Billionaires Index revealed Dangote’s net worth has surged to $28 billion, surpassing his previous ranking of 83rd in 2022.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Ibeju-Lekki, is the world’s largest single-train oil refinery and has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy by making the country self-reliant for fuel.
No other African comes close to Dangote’s ranking on the global list. Johann Rupert of South Africa holds the 174th position, followed by Nicky Oppenheimer at 224. Other notable African billionaires include Natie Karsh, Nassef Sawiris, and Naguib Sawiris.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s wealthiest individuals, calculated based on changes in markets, the economy, and Bloomberg reporting. The index is updated daily and provides detailed analysis of each billionaire’s fortune.
Ellon Musk and Jeff Bezos continue to hold the top two positions on the global list, followed by Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison.
Aliko Dangote’s philanthropic efforts have also been recognized. He was recently named among the top charitable individuals in the world by Richtopia. The Aliko Dangote Foundation, endowed with over $1.25 billion, focuses on health and nutrition, education, empowerment, and humanitarian relief.
